Vision
The dream of the world's tallest tower begins. Players discover the blueprints and the thinking behind the design.
"The Time Traveler: Burj Khalifa" is an independent educational game built by Ascend Esports in Unreal Editor for Fortnite. This is how a Made-in-Dubai project became a playable lesson in architecture, engineering and construction.
Burj Khalifa is more than a building. It is a story of vision, engineering and coordination on a scale most people will never see up close, which is exactly why it makes such a good classroom.
Our team set out to answer a simple question: what if students could not just read about how the world's tallest tower was built, but actually build it? Not in a textbook diagram, and not in a video, inside a game they already play, with the tools and logic of the real construction process behind every mission.
The result is "The Time Traveler: Burj Khalifa", an independent educational game developed in Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). Players enter a Time Tunnel, travel back to Dubai in 2002, and work forward through the tower's real construction phases, discovering blueprints, pouring foundations, operating cranes, installing safety systems and finally completing the spire.
"Our students don't just learn skills, they apply them to build virtual worlds with immersive gameplay experiences."
Educational content competes for attention with everything else on a child's screen. Building inside the Fortnite ecosystem removes that friction entirely: the platform is already installed, already familiar, and already social. UEFN gave our developers a professional-grade toolset, the same Unreal technology used across the games industry, to build something with real production values rather than a simplified classroom demo.
It also means the project doubles as a portfolio piece for the students and trainers who work on it. Learning UEFN is learning a genuine industry skill, aligned with the direction Dubai has set for its own gaming ecosystem.
The Timeline
Each era unlocks the next. Players progress through the real construction phases of the Burj Khalifa, from the first sketch to opening night.
2002
The dream of the world's tallest tower begins. Players discover the blueprints and the thinking behind the design.
2004
Groundbreaking and foundation work starts. Concrete, load and ground conditions become the puzzle.
2007
The tower rises above the skyline. Crane operations, material transport and safety engineering take over.
2010
Burj Khalifa opens to the world. Players complete the spire and see the finished tower they built.
How It Works
The gameplay loop is built so that learning and progression are the same action, you cannot advance the tower without understanding how it was built.
01
Students enter the Time Tunnel and discover engineering facts directly from the era of construction.
02
Missions include material transport, stabilising cranes and safety net installation in real-time scenarios.
03
Unlock eras and complete the construction from foundation to spire, managing resources along the way.
Gameplay Features
Every mechanic in the game maps to something the original construction teams actually had to solve.
Operate cranes, forklifts and complex logistics systems just like the real engineers did.
Structural and safety puzzles that test knowledge and problem-solving under time pressure.
Vertical tower inspections through drone flight simulation at full building height.
Meet the architects, engineers and construction teams behind each phase of the build.
Architecture and engineering concepts taught through play, not slides.
Developed inside the global Fortnite ecosystem, on professional Unreal tooling.
Educational Impact
The game was designed alongside the skills it teaches, so a session maps cleanly onto classroom outcomes.
Integrate directly into curriculums to bring history and STEM to life.
Enhance science and maths classes with real-world applications.
Inspire creative problem solving and engineering exploration.
The project will be available for esports competitions soon.
